Everton Football Club

Everton Football Club was founded in 1878 by the St. Domingo Church, in order for the youth attendance of the church to have a sport to play during the fall season. Shortly after its creation, Everton started to grow and eventually became one of the founding members of the Premier football league in England. Playing out of Goodison Park, during the first half of the 20th century Everton excelled as superstars such as Dixie Dean helped the team win many first division titles. During the 1970s and 90’s Everton FC went through chaos as they were unable to find a coach that would turn the organization into a championship type of team. Howard Kendall was then hired to be the team’s coach, and under his leadership Everton FC was able to again win competitions. In 2002 David Moyer was appointed manager of the Everton after Kendall’s successor Walter Smith resigned from the manager’s position. Under him, the team has gained success in the < a href="http://www.oleole.com/england/premierleague/ll4.html>English Premier League as they are currently ranked fifth overall behind Liverpool FC, their arch rivals

Where the nickname “The Toffees” came from

There are several reasons why Everton F.C. got the nickname “The Toffees”. One of the explanations behind the name is that there was a business near Goodison Park named Mother Noblett's Toffee Shop, which advertised and sold sweets, including the Everton Mint, on match days. This business would also give away Everton mints during the game. Another explanation behind the label is that Ye Anciente Everton Toffee House was near the Queen's Head hotel in which early club meetings took place. Besides being nicknamed "The Toffees", Everton FC has also been called the "The Blues" and "The People’s Club".

Everton FC in 2008/ 2009

With a fifth place finish in last years EPL table, and qualifying for the UEFA Cup, Everton FC is looking like they can rise to the top of the English Premier League again in the 2008/2009 season. David Moyers and the Everton squad are optimistic about their off-season changes to the squad. For most of the games, the club will be either playing in the 4-5-1 or 4-4-2 formation, with Yakubu as the Toffees main striker and Anichebe or Vaughan as his attacking partners. On the defensive side of the ball, the club will look for Phil Jagielka to make big defensive stops and American goalkeeper Tim Howard. The key to this season is to keep all the players healthy, because back up is limited. .

At the beginning of the season, the Everton squad did not start out as well as last season. The club was ranked 14th in the EPL table, with a total of 7 points. The Toffees lost against top ranked Liverpool FC by a score of 2-0. However, if the Everton FC squad refrains from being injured and plays at it did last season, it will do fine.
