Memorable England Football Results
The 1966 World Cup is one of the most notable events for England, and might be considered the team’s most important achievement ever. Beating their rivals West Germany at their home
Wembley stadium while hosting the World Cup made the victory even more poignant.
England later continued their thrashing of
Germany with a score of 5-1 in Munich, which was also a memorable match. This goal difference is due in
great part by
Michael Owen and a hat-trick, enabling England to qualify automatically for the 2002 FIFA World Cup and inflicting yet another
embarrassing defeat on the Germans. The England win also marked the first time that Germany were defeated in a World Cup qualifier.
Another stunning moment for the English team was David Beckham's penalty kick in the 44th minute again Argentina in the 2002 World Cup. Argentina were taken out of the competition with this
stunning goal, and the win helped England exorcise the ghosts that had accumulated at the hands of the Argentineans at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 and in France in 1998.
Steve McClaren was named England's head coach following the 2006 World Cup in Germany after Sven-Göran Eriksson failed to produce meaningful results. McClaren had even less success in his
short 16 month tenure and the team did not even qualify for the
EURO 2008 - the first time they missed the European Championship since 1984.
McClaren left the squad on 22 November 2007, and he was replaced by Italian Fabio Capello, former manager for Real Madrid and AC Milan. Capello doesn’t speak much English but has a good record
with clubs. He is only the second foreign manager to coach the team.
